This stunning 2020 Gold 1 oz Barbados Trident coin is produced by the U.S. based Scottsdale Mint, in cooperation with the government of Barbados. As with previous years, this fourth release of the series, the 2020 Trident has a single design change on the reverse. The finely engraved new background pattern is exceptionally nice. The overall design of the coin is elegant in the setting of its elements.
The obverse features a finely detailed image of the coat of arms of this beautiful independent island nation. As with every national seal, a story of the nation's history and pride is celebrated. This is certainly true for Barbados, a former British possession in the Caribbean. As the banner under the seal states, "Pride and Industry." The date is split, with the "20" to the left, and "20" to the right of the centered coat of arms. Under each, is placed a small, broken trident. Encircling the bottom rim, "Barbados" is inscribed in a large, elegant typeface. The coin's field has a vertical brushed appearance, and is completely encircled at the rim with a small beaded band.
To say the reverse is very pleasing is an understatement. As with the obverse, the rim is encircled with the small beaded band. The focal point is the large trident head, broken clean from its staff. Derived from the nation's flag, the broken trident symbolizes Barbados independence from Great Britain. The trident is brilliant, though its surface has the appearance of being hammered. The background displays a new pattern, distinct from the first three releases. A series of calm, lapping ocean waves fill the background field. The waves are prominent at the bottom and become less so as they fade into the distant horizon. The visual effect is pleasantly calming. Two finer lines encircle the field, in which are inscribed the coin's purity, weight, and face value.
