Scottsdale Mint, in partnership with the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), is returning for the second annual release schedule of the extremely popular EC8 8-coin series, featuring the eight Eastern Caribbean Island nation members. Included are Antigua & Barbuda, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Anguilla, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, and Saint Lucia. The second new edition to release is this 2019 Gold 1 oz St. Kitts & Nevis Brown Pelican.
Each of the inaugural 2018 8-coin editions quickly became best-sellers and maintained strong series popularity throughout the full release cycle. Now, with this second 2019 release, the series is well underway! We are expecting even greater response to each edition than we experienced in 2018.
The very attractive obverse will be common to all eight EC8 2019 releases. The inset features the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Distinctive laurels of evergreen shrubs frame the portrait on either side, nearly filling the center inset. A narrow band encircles the rim, which includes the inscriptions, "EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK" at the top, and "1 oz .999 Gold . QUEEN ELIZABETH II . TEN DOLLARS" at the bottom rim.
The reverse of this new 2019 Gold 1 oz St. Kitts & Nevis Brown Pelican features a lone Brown Pelican, perched on a buoy in a harbor. This curiously-shaped bird is very prevalent throughout the Eastern Caribbean islands and is the national bird of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
The water is calm, with boats shown in the background heading out into open water. The Brown Pelican, colored in tan, brown, and mustard yellow, is very prominent in the forefront of the scene, and displays the finest of detail. Our perspective is as one peering out of a boat's side port hole, looking towards the shore, while passing close by the buoy, which is colored red. You could almost reach out and touch the pelican (not recommended).
The entire scene is displayed in a circular inset that is positioned a little lower than center. This makes the rim-band somewhat wider at the top, increasingly narrower as it reaches the bottom. Very finely-engraved lines fill the band. Interestingly, the offset circular inset allows the lines to be very close together at the bottom rim and then spread further apart toward the top. The overall effect creates a remarkable depth of field to the scene. Truly stunning! Inscriptions include "St. Kitts & Nevis" at the top rim in a very nice script style. The release year 2019 is positioned just inside the inset at the top.
Saint Kitts & Nevis are part of the Leeward Islands chain, and are separated by a mere 2-miles wide channel known as "The Narrows." It is known as one of the first Caribbean island settled by Europeans, including both the British and French. It also has a long and intriguing history, which far predates the time of the European settlements. Interestingly, the written history of the two islands are said to be one of the longest of the Caribbean.
As you would expect of such a beautiful Caribbean island destination, tourism is a prominent economic factor. From Nevis Peak, a potentially active volcano rising 3,232 ft, to the Summit Crater atop Mount Liamuiga on Saint Kitts, to the pristine coasts, this two-island country is amazing!
Today, Saint Kitts and Nevis is a Commonwealth realm, which includes active membership in the Commonwealth of Nations. It is also a full member of the eight sovereign states of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, which in association with Scottsdale Mint, has introduced this amazing EC8 bullion coin series.
