The Designs of the Half Dollars

The Mixed Half Dollars have varying designs on both the obverse and reverse. The set of inscriptions, however, mostly remains the same, with changing locations on its respective sides.

The inscriptions on the obverse are “LIBERTY,” the US motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issue. Apart from the inscriptions, the effigies of various significant personnel are depicted, including Benjamin Franklin, Former US President John F. Kennedy, the Walking Liberty, and the Head of Liberty by Charles Barber. The position of the inscription changes with respect to the portrait. Depending on the coin and its availability, the year of issue may range from 1892 to 1964.

The reverse of the Half Dollars includes the inscriptions depicting the country of the issue as “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the US motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and the face value (FV) “Half a DOLLAR.” The Franklin half-dollar depicts the Liberty Bell, the Kennedy half-dollar, and the Barber half-dollar depicts the heraldic eagle with a shield, holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. Lastly, the Walking Liberty reverse depicts the American bald eagle standing on an olive branch with outstretched wings.
