Although the themes, events, and characters of the Arthurian legend vary from text to text, and there is no canonical version, Geoffrey of Monmouth's 12th-century version of events often serves as the basis for later stories. Geoffrey depicted Arthur as a king of Britain who defeated the Saxons and established a vast empire. Many elements and incidents that are now an integral part of the Arthurian story appear in Geoffrey's Historia, including Arthur's father Uther Pendragon, the magician Merlin, Arthur's wife Guinevere, the sword Excalibur, Arthur's conception at Tintagel, his final battle against Mordred at Camlann, and final rest in Avalon.

As a legal tender offering of Great Britain, the obverse of this 2023 Great Britain Myths & Legends King Arthur 1oz Silver BU coin displays the right-facing effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, created by Jody Clark. Inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II D. G. REG. F. D. 2 POUNDS."

The reverse features the brave and heroic King Arthur, holding his trusty sword and ready for battle. His castle is visible over his left shoulder. The background texture is comprised of micro-dots, a remarkable table texture technology. Inscriptions encircling the rim include, "KING ARTHUR . 1 OZ . FINE SILVER . 999 . 2023". The designer's initials (JC) are displayed at the bottom right.
