The Tudor Beasts silver BU Yale coin, like the Queen's Beast series before it, has become a highly treasured favorite among collectors and precious metals investors worldwide. The coin's obverse displays Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the 5 pounds face value, while the reverse features the legendary Yale of Beaufort. Quite interestingly, the Queen's portrait was designed by Jody Clark and adopted into British coinage since 2016.

The Heraldic Yale of Beaufort

The Yale of Beaufort was a mythical beast adopted as a heraldic symbol representing a proud defense. Royal Mint states that "the Yale of Beaufort connects Henry VIII with the House of Beaufort through his grandmother – another attempt by the king to reinforce the legitimacy of the Tudor dynasty. The beast is also linked to the title of Somerset, which Jane Seymour’s brother held as Duke. It is thought Henry VIII gave the beast to his queen in honour of her brother."

The beast's coat was white and covered with spots, and it was able to swivel each of its horns independently. Its shield features a portcullis surmounted by a royal crown. The uncrowned portcullis was a Beaufort badge used both crowned and uncrowned by Henry VII.

Its appearance, according to Pliny the Elder, was "the size of a hippopotamus, with an elephant's tail of black or dark brown in color and the jaws of a boar and horns more than a cubit in length, capable of being moved and which in a fight are raised alternately and presented to the attack or sloped backward in turn as opportunity requires."

In stunning detail, the reverse features the Yale of Beaufort reared behind its shield, which depicts a royal crown resting atop a portcullis. The Yale of Beaufort fills the center inset, a stern countenance signaling its status as a heraldic beast and supporter of the British Royal Family. Inscriptions are "YALE OF BEAUFORT" and "2023."
