From the mint: "The Battle of Midway was a major naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II that took place on 4–7 June 1942, six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea. The U.S. Navy under Admirals Chester W. Nimitz, Frank J. Fletcher, and Raymond A. Spruance defeated an attacking fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy under Admirals Isoroku Yamamoto, Chuichi Nagumo, and Nobutake Kondo north of Midway Atoll, inflicting devastating damage on the Japanese fleet. Military historian John Keegan called it "the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare".."

A Turning Point




The Battle of Midway proved to be a turning point in the Pacific Theater. Four American aircraft carriers battled against a fleet from the Japanese Navy. Military historian John Keegan has said it was "the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare". Now we have a coin worthy of representing this pivotal battle!




The coin's obverse depicts a battle in World War II over the Midway Atoll. Allied planes are on a bombing raid, with the dominant plane featuring a moveable propeller. Bombs explode all over the ground below the planes. Inscribed along the bottom is "THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY."




The reverse displays United States and Japan troop movements in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The names of both Japanese and American ships are inscribed throughout the scene, as is the location names where battles took place. The Ian Rank_Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is positioned center-bottom. Inscribed along the bottom is "ELIZABETH II . NIUE . IRB . 2021 . 5 DOLLARS . Ag 999."
