Anthony De Francisci designs the obverse of the Peace Silver Dollar from the modeling of his wife, Teresa De Francisci. The head and neck effigy of the Goddess Lady Liberty is displayed with wavy hair and a crown made from rays of sun. The effigy is encircled by the inscriptions of “LIBERTY'' and “IN GOD WE TRVST”, where the “U” is rendered as a “V”.
The reverse side of the coin includes an American bald eagle perched on an olive branch. The eagle majestically displays its features with the sun rays in the background. The reverse also includes the inscriptions of the country of issue, the motto of the US, and face value, such as “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” Below the eagle is “PEACE” engraved, making the Peace Dollar the only coin that depicts the message and purpose clearly and directly.
The Peace Dollar was introduced in 1921, after the discontinuation of the Morgan Dollar. The Peace Dollar was released to promote the idea of Peace after the horrific World War I. The original Peace Dollar has a high relief design that was later lowered to sustain the quality of the coin for a longer period. The reverse depicted a broken sword held by the eagle on the branch, which raised immense controversy and protest as it signified defeat rather than peace. Ultimately, through a series of hurdles, the Peace Dollar was released, completing the redesign of the US Coinage history that began in 1907.
