The obverse side of the Peace Dollar bears the Lady Liberty design by Anthony De Francisci. The design is modeled by Anthony’s wife, Teresa De Francisci, as she wears a radiate crown with the classic liberty cap in the portrait. The obverse also includes the inscriptions of “LIBERTY” and the motto of the US, “IN GOD WE TRVST”, where the letter “U” is rendered as “V”, referring to the classic Latin scripts and Roman coins.

The reverse includes the perched American bald eagle on an olive branch as it gazes in the distance. In the United States of America, the bald eagle is a symbol of strength, courage, immortality, and freedom. The portrayal of the eagle is surrounded by the identifying marks as “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “ONE DOLLAR”, and the motto of the US, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, which stands for “Out of many, One.”

The Peace Dollars

The Peace Dollar was minted in the period of 1921 to 1928, 1934 to 1935, and in 2021 for collection and investment. The designer Anthony De Francisci was selected from a competition where he designed Lady Liberty through the modeling of his wife, Teresa De Francisci. The Peace Dollar became the first coin in American Coinage history to display its purpose and message directly on the coin’s reverse below the eagle.
