The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most sought after and desirable coins from the US Mint. The obverse side of the coin features the closeup effigy of Lady Liberty in the left profile designed by George T. Morgan, hence the moniker. The effigy of Lady Liberty is modeled by Anna Willess Williams wearing a classic Phyrgian cap with an decorated hair band that reads, “LIBERTY”. The inscriptions surrounding the effigy depict the motto of the US and the year of issue along with 13 stars representing the 13 colonies of the United States of America. The inscriptions are, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” which means, “Out of many, One” and the year, “1880”.

The 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar’s reverse bears the heraldic eagle in the center holding the arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The olive branch and arrows are the symbols for the contrast of peace and war. The eagle is supported by two wreaths on either side with the motto of the US “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the eagle. Below the wreaths is the mint mark, “S” for the San Francisco facility of US Mint. The identifying marks on the outer circle, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. ONE DOLLAR” displaying the country of issue and face value.
