The obverse side of the coin features the effigy of Lady Liberty, designed by Anthony De Francisci. The effigy is depicted wearing a radiate crown that represents the sun's rays and symbolizes new beginnings. The effigy is encircled by the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” the US motto, “IN GOD WE TRVST,” and the year of the issue.
The reverse of the Silver Peace Dollar showcases the majestic American bald eagle perched on a rock at the top of the mountain. The coin design is the first coin to directly depict the purpose of the coin with “PEACE” engraved on the rock. The inscriptions on the reverse are, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. E PLURIBUS UNUM. ONE DOLLAR,” representing the country of issue, the US motto, and the face value.
After the devastating effects of World War I, the world needed an emblem of peace. The Federal Government of the US decided to introduce a coin that symbolized peace directly, being the first coin to depict its purpose. As a result, a competition was held to finalize the design of the Peace Dollar, which was won by an Italian sculptor, Anthony De Francisci. Thus, the Peace Silver Dollar was introduced to the masses and gained immense popularity immediately!
