The large, mature male silverback featured on the coin's reverse is truly an amazing display of raw ferocity in action! In each separate troop of gorillas, a single mature silverback assumes sole leadership and defends the group. When defense is necessary, the silverback throws all 4-foot, 400 pounds of his fierceness into the situation. Otherwise, he is generally docile in everyday activities. The active scene depicts the silverback in a left-facing, head and chest profile filling nearly the entire field. The gorilla's mouth is open to its full extent in a deafening roar! It is remarkable just how wide open his powerful jaws can extend. His teeth are fully exposed, adding even further intensity to the encounter. He is obviously seeking to strike fear into whatever is approaching his troop.
The fineness of detail both on the gorilla's expression and his fur is truly stunning! The background pattern displays dense jungle vegetation and terrain. Common to the series, the gorilla is encircled by attractive border markings at the rim. Arched above the silverback's image is the inscription "Congo Silverback Gorilla" and below is the coin's date, weight and purity. Also, common to the series, the obverse displays the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Congo and face value of 5,000 Francs CFA.
