This is the second release in the Mythology Silver Series, produced for Niue by the Mint of Gdansk. Sisyphus, founder and king of what is now Corinth (formerly Ephyra), was punished by Hades for cheating death twice. His punishment? He has to push a large stone up a hill; however, every time he gets to the top, the stone rolls back down to the hill's base. Sisyphus is to do this for eternity. The Gdansk Mint says that "tasks that are both laborious and futile are therefore described as Sisyphean."
The coin's obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II's effigy inside a circle with an ornate border. In the background are barren mountains, a stone, and Greek ruins. A decorative border of gilded gold encircles the scene. Inscriptions are "NIUE . 5 DOLLARS . 2022 . Ag 999 . QUEEN ELIZABETH II."
The reverse depicts Sisyphus as he pushes an extremely heavy boulder up a hill. Sisyphus's boulder is done in very high relief, and the coin's irregular shape emphasizes its weight. The same gilded gold decorative border on the reverse is on the obverse. Inscription is "SISYPHUS."
