Sea Turtle

This new 2022 Montserrat edition of the ECCB EC8 coins series highlights the beauty and simplicity of sea turtles. Hopefully, this brings attention to the fact that six of the seven known sea turtle species have been identified to be at risk of extinction.

The highly attractive obverse is common to the series. The inset features the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Distinctive laurels of evergreen shrubs frame the portrait on either side, nearly filling the center inset. A narrow band encircles the rim, which includes the inscriptions, "EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK. 1 oz .999 SILVER . QUEEN ELIZABETH II . TWO DOLLARS."

The reverse depicts two sea turtles, lazily swimming in the warm ocean waters off the coast of Montserrat, with one dominating the scene while the other floats in the background. The turtle in the foreground is colored in reds, oranges, and browns, with shades of blue on its underside. Inscriptions are: "MONTSERRAT" at the bottom rim, and "2022" above it.
