The obverse side of the coin features Christian Gobrecht’s effigy of Lady Liberty in a left profile as she gazes at the sky. Liberty wears a crown with a headband that reads, “LIBERTY” and the year of issue below the effigy varies as per availability. The effigy is encircled by 13 stars that represent the 13 colonies of the US.
The reverse of the $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin features the heraldic eagle with a shield on its chest divided into sections depicting the elements of the United States. The Pre-1866 designs of the $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin do not include the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” whereas the post-1866 designs feature the motto. The identifying marks around the heraldic eagle are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. FIVE D.”
