The obverse side of the coin features Christian Gobrecht’s effigy of Lady Liberty in a left profile as she gazes at the sky. The reverse of the $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin features the heraldic eagle with a shield on its chest divided into sections depicting the elements of the United States. The Pre-1866 designs of the $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin do not include the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” whereas the post-1866 designs feature the motto. The identifying marks around the heraldic eagle are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. FIVE D.”
