Produced by U.S. based Scottsdale Mint, in cooperation with the government of Ghana, the African Lion series has become an immediate hit. Following the 2017 debut release, this new 2018 Silver African Leopard is designed with impeccable craftsmanship. With proof-like finish, the brilliance is stunning, and displays the intricate detail perfectly.
As with the 2017 release, the obverse displays a right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II, uniquely presented against a leopard-print background. Encircling the rim are the inscriptions, "Elizabeth II . 2018 . Five Cedis . Republic of Ghana."
The reverse features an amazing action scene of this beautifully powerful cat in its native African habitat. The realism displayed is like a still-clipping from an African Nature series, filming the leopard in its natural setting. The big cat has stalked and finally attacked and killed his prey. The antelope was unable to escape the leopard's amazing speed and strength.
Now we watch as the leopard has already dragged the animal into a high branch of a large tree. This is a common practice the leopard follows to protect itself and its fresh kill from larger predators as it feasts. And feasting is exactly what this hungry cat is doing, ripping through the flesh with its powerful jaws and sharp teeth! This is a startling scene to display on a coin, yet it is depicted with such beauty and fine detail the result is magnificent.
The design focuses on the leopard's sleek, spotted body. Pictured in a side-view, the design reveals all but its hind-section, its front paws stand upon the prey, while actively feeding. The lean, muscular contours of its body powerfully displays its awesome strength. The antelope is also finely detailed. The natural background shows the treeline in the distance, from a high vantage point.
